Congratulations to Calfee Community and Cultural Center, Inc. and New River Community Action, Inc. for being selected for the inaugural nonprofit cohort of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s READY Appalachia. READY Appalachia is a new community capacity-building initiative offering free training and flexible funding to Appalachian nonprofits, community foundations, local governments, and Local Development Districts.

READY Nonprofits offers curriculum to help nonprofit executives and board members increase their own capacity, strengthen their organizations, and better serve their communities. The Fall 2022 term of 10-week instruction began in September and includes 75 nonprofits based in the Appalachian Region. The cohort-based learning will include skill development and grant opportunities to increase their capacity to solve pressing issues and create positive economic change. The Calfee Community and Cultural Center, Inc is working to honor the rich history of the Calfee Training School in Pulaski, to increase awareness of local African American history by establishing and operating a museum and spaces for multi-generational social, educational, and cultural programming. The facility and grounds will also provide early childhood education opportunities, community kitchen, digital learning lab and a community resource center. New River Community Action, Inc. works with the region’s most vulnerable residents including homeless, ex-offenders, disabled and struggling young families. They offer a variety of programs to improve the lives of low-income people. Some services address basic needs such as food, shelter, and utilities.
